Dan Bassett

Invented in 1981.

Dan grew up in St. Ives, Cornwall. Much of his youth was spent messing around in his Grandfather’s fishing punts and in the sea, swimming and fishing. Not knowing what else to do, he joined the Royal Navy and went to Sea to earn a living. Dan left the Navy and joined the RNLI as a volunteer in St. Ives. He continued to work at sea as a skipper and then as a security consultant defending crews against attack by Pirates in the Indian Ocean.

Dan’s paintings display his relationship with the sea and portray its movement, its moods and its merciless beauty. The brooding storm clouds hint at the stresses of everyday life and the sweeping windswept skies hint at adventures had.

Dan is self-taught but with the luxury of having some “very talented friends and family to call on” or text, generally at a very unsociable hour. Dan has a love of the sea and paints mostly from memory and mood. He draws on experiences from the beauty of swimming with playful wild Dolphins at his home beach of Porthmeor, to the fury of being battened down in a Korean Typhoon. But typically, draws inspiration from blustery walks around Cornwall’s wild beaches with his Faithfull mutt ‘Boris’.
